Sundarban Christ Rural Development Society (S C R D S) has been working in the remotest areas of Sundarban region since 1985 amongst the rural communities in West Bengal organizing and empowering the weak to obtain justice and acquire human dignity and rights and overall development in the community. In this effort SCRDS IS WORKING IN CLOSE COOPERATION WITH Blocks, Panchayats (local government at village level) Rural Educational Institutes, Clubs, Civil Society Organizations various government departments and banks. It was registered in 1995 and later received permission from the government of India to receive foreign assistance. Our FCRA number is 147110678.

SCRDS is campaigning to empower the marginalized and downtrodden people, especially women and children of the society, against oppressive forces such as money lenders, middlemen and the effects of globalization. Centuries of exploitation by the rich have enslaved masses of Dalits (lower castes) till the present day, this includes landless farmers, domestic, labourers, vegetable and fish vendors and daily wage earners. Women and children are the most vulnerable targets for abuse and oppression, they are denied the most basic of human rights.

The SCRDS team is comprised of 9 board members, 25 dedicated field and administrative workers who work in coordination with community leaders who are exclusively targeting areas in the Sundarban region in West Bengal. The team has used their initiative to form resistance movements and oppose gross injustice prevalent in these rural areas. This process is an ongoing one which will encourage peoples ability to exert control over the economic and political system.

Social Scenario

Poverty is the greatest threat to political stability, social cohesion and environmental health of the human races of this planet. Poverty creates a condition in the society, which negates all human rights, not just a selected few. A poor person has no right at all, whether social, political or economical.
