Our project is a cyclone prone area of Sundaraban region (West Bengal) and is subject to frequent inundation. Most of the families live in dilapidated mud hut, houses do not even have latrine facilities with many using indigenous latrines.
There is no availability of safe drinking water. Few existing tube wells and ponds provide unhygienic water due to use of which many adults and children suffering from gastroentitis and skin diseases. There are no doctors or any dispensary available within miles and the sick are left unattended. For transport main dependency is waterway on which again is dependent on a high tide. Even communication is absent due to no telephone connection, also life is miserable since there is no electric supply.
Type of employment existing daily wage are seasonal functioning only during cultivation and harvesting period. They engage in carpentry, masonary, net and mat weaving, tailoring quilt stitching which pays them really low. Female members of the family also work making bidis (local cigarette) Bamboo basket making fishing in the river and selling them in local market paying them really low. They hardly can meet their expenses are forced to starve. Their main dict is rice, some families owning little land many don’t and can’t do much to increase fertility as they can’t afford to use fertilizers.
Due to such poverty they are unable to send their children to school or provide nutrition. Many of them have enrolled their children to our primary education center and we are providing all the materials children need for education free of cost, along with many free medical treatment provided to both children and adults.
The community lives in communal harmony also participating in local cultural practices in unison. These people are poor but have high morals and are subject to unfortunate miseries and therefore deserve to be helped. |
